Phyll Opoku-Gyimah is the executive director and co-founder of UK #BlackPride, an annual event that celebrates #LGBTQ people of African, Asian, Caribbean, Middle Eastern and Latin American descent. She is also the head of equality & Learning at the Public and Commercial Services Trade Union as well as a current trustee of LGBT rights charity, Stonewall. Frank Bailey was a political activist who came to England in the early 50s. After hearing from the Fire Brigades Union that Black people weren’t employed by the service, Frank applied and joined the West Ham Fire Brigade, making him the first Black #firefighter in England.
Frank ended his service there a decade later as branch secretary of the Silvertown Fire Station. In 1965 he became a social worker as well as the first Black advocate representing Black youth at Marylebone Magistrates Court. What makes Frank special is the fact that he defied the norms of his time, paving way for more opportunities as well as becoming an inspiration for Black people in the Public and Civil Service. #BHM ...
